With the Leica Summilux-M 1:1.4 / 28mm ASPH., the series of high-speed M wide-angle focal lengths is now complete.
The imaging performance is already at a very high level at full aperture, over the entire field of view and even at close range - thanks to a "floating element". With its excellent contrast rendition, the Lens has the same recognized high level as the Leica Summilux-M 1:1.4 / 35mm ASPH. and in some cases even surpasses it. The vignetting inherent in every optical system is naturally more pronounced with a wide-angle lens, especially a high-speed lens like this one, than with normal and long focal length lenses. At full aperture in 35 mm format, it amounts to a maximum of approx. 3.4 f-stops, i.e. in the corners of the image, and approx. 2 stops in the Leica M8 models with their somewhat smaller format. Stopping down to 5.6 visibly reduces this light fall-off towards the edge of the image - to 1.8 or 0.8 stops.

Stopping down further no longer results in any significant reduction, as essentially only the natural vignetting remains. Distortion is extremely low for a wide-angle lens at a maximum of 1.1% and is therefore rarely noticeable in practice. A total of ten lenses are used to achieve this performance. Seven of these consist of glass types with anomalous partial dispersion to correct color aberrations, plus an aspherical surface. To maintain performance at close range, one element at the rear of the optics is moved independently of the rest of the construction as a "floating element".
