  • Fast portrait Lens
  • for the highest demands
  • very high aperture F1.4
  • robust and weatherproof
  • state-of-the-art optical technology with perfect edge-to-edge sharpness
  • 9 blades with round aperture for natural bokeh

High aperture F1.4 for perfect portrait shots and special applications
In addition to the highest quality standards of the D FA★ series, a moderate telephoto Lens must also meet very special requirements. The maximum aperture of F1.4 is an important prerequisite not only for portrait shots with an effectively defocused background and the associated bokeh, but also for many other applications, such as low-light and hand-held shots or in special genres such as concert and reportage photography.

State-of-the-art optical technology
The HD PENTAX-D FA★ 85mm F1.4 ED SDM AW has three Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass optical elements to effectively minimize chromatic aberration and an aspherical molded glass optical element to effectively compensate for spherical and chromatic aberrations as well as field curvature to deliver extra clear, high-contrast images with edge-to-edge sharpness without color fringing, even at open aperture. In addition, distortion is reduced to almost zero at a focusing distance of up to four meters. This enables clearly defined, distortion-free images over the entire focusing range, from the minimum focusing distance to infinity. This underscores the lens's status as an excellent portrait lens.

HD coating for optimum light transmission and minimal reflection
The lens is equipped with a high-quality, multi-layer HD (High Definition) coating, which reduces the average reflectivity in the visible radiation spectrum to less than 50% compared to conventional multi-layer coatings, effectively minimizing flare and ghosting even in challenging lighting conditions, such as backlighting.

Super-fast autofocus with new SDM motor
The conventional PENTAX SDM (pencil type) ultrasonic motors are small and therefore develop a rather low torque, which has to be amplified with additional gears. Since the heavy focus unit of the HD PENTAX-D FA★ 85mm F1.4 ED SDM AW has more optical elements than other lenses, a larger ring-shaped autofocus motor with Supersonic Direct Drive (SDM) was developed especially for this lens. This generates a stronger torque that is approximately 1.3 times the torque of the unit installed in the HD PENTAX-D FA★ 50mm F1.4 SDM AW.

The new SDM ultrasonic ring motor thus ensures flawless, fast autofocus operation that is approx. 10x faster than previously used SDM motors in PENTAX lenses.

Dustproof and weather-resistant construction for carefree photography
PENTAX cameras know hardly any limits and so special demands are also placed on the Lens. The AW (All Weather) design with eight special sealing rings prevents moisture and dust from entering the interior of the lens. Together with a correspondingly weather-resistant digital SLR camera from PENTAX, the Lens forms a durable and reliable shooting system that delivers outstanding performance even in demanding shooting situations such as rain, fog, splash water or sub-zero temperatures down to -10°C. In addition, the front lens has an SP (Super Protect) coating, which reduces dirt and moisture adhesion and makes it easier to clean, e.g. from splash water or greasy substances.
